Presently, there are just 22 generic Top-Level Domains, or gTLDs, in use, including .com.

The most popular applications were for .app, where 13 organisations want to administer the domain. Ten applications were received for .art and 11 for .inc, the Telegraph reports.

According to the report, Internet search giant Google had already said it is applying for .lol, .google, .youtube and many others, and appears to have applied for 101 in total.

Amazon has made 76 applications, going head-to-head with Google in many instances, including .app.
